The over-the-air wireless charging system can recharge four smartphones at once, no charging pads needed.
Motorola is showing off new technology that promises to wirelessly recharge a smartphone up to 10 feet away through the air.
The Lenovo-owned brand demoed the technology today in a brief 30-second video. The wireless charger looks like a large Wi-Fi modem. When an applicable phone is nearby, it can automatically detect the device and begin feeding it power, without relying on a charging cable or even a charging pad.
Motorola says the system can wireless recharge a smartphone at a distance of up to 3 meters (or 9.8 feet). The same system is also capable of recharging four smartphones simultaneously.
The other standout feature is how the wireless charger can beam power to a smartphone across a 100-degree field of view. So you don't have to place the device directly in front of the charger to receive some juice. The device can also be placed at an angle.
Motorola developed the technology with GuRu Wireless, a company that specializes in creating wireless charging tech for consumer gadgets, gaming systems, and smart home devices.
“A fundamental departure from previous power transfer methods, GuRu employs proprietary 'Smart Lensing' technology that enables the use of focused energy beams for highly efficient power transfer," the company's website says. “‘Smart Lensing’ pinpoints specific targets for power delivery rather than flooding an entire room with wireless energy.”
However, Motorola is remaining mum on when the wireless charging system will actually arrive and how much it'll cost. The vendor’s blog post on the demo merely notes the over-the-air wireless power solution will launch sometime in the future.
The other important question is how fast the technology can recharge a phone. Motorola did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
