Future Samsung Galaxy smartphones are expected to have even bigger camera sensors.
On Friday, Samsung revealed that it has built the world's first 200-megapixel image sensor with a pixel size of 0.64μm.
The sensor, called the Isocell HP1, is capable of taking ultrahigh resolution images, but it's still small enough to fit on a handheld device. Samsung says, "With the Isocell HP1, photos have an astonishing amount of detail that helps keep the image sharp even when cropped or resized."
The new sensor essentially doubles the megapixel resolution found in the Samsung Galaxy Ultra S21 with a rear 108MP sensor called the Isocell HM3 for the main rear camera. You can use it to take pictures at full resolution, but in general the camera snaps photos at 12MP resolution to help save storage space. Images are condensed through a process called "photo-binning," which can combine multiple photographed pixels into a single high-quality pixel.
According to Samsung, the new Isocell HP1 can take better photos even in low light conditions.
Samsung adds, "The HP1 combines 16 neighboring pixels into a 12.5MP image sensor with a large 2.56μm pixels." "The newly designed 2.56μm pixel is capable of greater light absorption and sensitivity, producing brighter and clearer photos indoors or at dusk."
In addition, the Isocell HP1 can also capture 8K videos at 30 frames per second. But through the same photo-binning technology, it can merge pixels together to record videos over 50MP resolution without cropping the size of the video.
Samsung did not say when the sensor would arrive in the actual product. But the company has started making it available to smartphone makers, which will almost certainly include itself.
