Your phone's screen starts to bulge, or its seams open, or your laptop keyboard grows an unsightly bulge. This could be due to a large bubble that may have arisen slowly or suddenly in your battery. But why does this happen, and what can you do about it?
We talked to some engineers and experts at computer manufacturers and related companies about what you need to know about a swollen battery, and what to do if you have one.
What is causing my battery to swell?
A swollen battery is the result of two things: energy density and heat. Swelling is the result of too much current flowing uncontrollably inside a cell of the battery, which causes a buildup of heat and gas. This happens when the material inside the battery wears out or is subjected to stress or physical damage over time.
A given laptop battery is made up of many discrete cells, and problems may arise with only one or more of them. With Apple's MacBooks, some Ultrabooks running Windows (notably, some of Microsoft's Surface Laptop models), and some Chromebooks, batteries you can't use to replace are sometimes a thing. So the first step is talking to your laptop's tech support to see what your options are. If your battery starts to drain, it's time to act.
When assessing the condition of your swollen battery, follow these steps:
Assess whether you can even use the battery yourself. Contact the laptop manufacturer's support line or online resources for your product to ask about your options through "official" channels. Some popular models have (unofficial) online tutorials that show the battery replacement process as well.
See warranty coverage, and whether any still apply. (Unless you've paid for an extended warranty, several years in ownership the answer is probably "no") Note that if you're confident enough to try to do a battery swap yourself, doing so may void the warranty. may be cancelled, if any of these remain. Also, sometimes laptop batteries are covered by a shorter warranty than the main laptop.
Be realistic about what you need to get the job done. If you want to try to fix it yourself, don't try and just do it with an old tool. You may need a special screwdriver or two (star-head screws are common on laptops), and sites like iFixit sell specialized tool kits for Macs and other machines. A swollen battery can be the kiss of death for some laptops depending on the product and the manufacturer. “Batteries can have either a UL listing or a rating that determines whether they are customer-service- or client-technician-serviceable,” says Thompson.
And most important: at the first sign of battery swelling, back up any important data ASAP, and stop using the laptop.
What should I do with my swollen battery?
The only thing left to do with your old, swollen battery is to dispose of it. With lithium-ion batteries, you must proceed with caution so as not to puncture the battery when handling or removing it from your PC. Never handle the battery with metal tools, or bend it when it is swollen. (A metal device can pierce the outer skin and start a chemical reaction; we accidentally replaced an old smartphone battery and some very small fires started.) Swollen batteries also contain gases that you can breathe in. I don't want to breathe.
If you are replacing the battery yourself, make sure to put it in the box as soon as you remove the battery. Do not throw the battery in the trash or anywhere else. It is not an environmental one, and exposes sanitation workers who may come in contact with the battery to health. Always dispose of batteries - swollen or not - at an authorized battery-disposal facility. Your system manufacturer can tell you about disposal procedures and locations. Beyond that, a quick Google search will point you to a proper battery-disposal site. You can also contact your local government and waste-disposal branch for instructions.
Depending on where you live, big-box retailers may also be the easiest route. "I strongly recommend that people take them to Best Buy, or to local [tech] retailers or even Home Depot, which have [batteries] recycle boxes," Jake says. "Even good lithium batteries are causing havoc in the waste stream."
Enjoy the performance and new smart upgrades offered by your appliances and lithium-ion batteries, but keep in mind that they should be treated with care and respect. If not, it may be more than just a battery that needs replacing.
